This will be an amazing adventure in Africa that includes two countries, safaris in two National Parks, community engagement, and a visit to the world’s largest waterfall. On this 12 day trip, we will go on safari (multiple times), experience breathtaking views, learn about the culture and histories of the two countries, engage with the local community, and enjoy various water activities. We will enjoy authentic Malawian and Zambian cuisines and make connections that will last a lifetime.

Day 1 - Arrive in Blantyre, Malawi

Arrive at Blantyre’s Chileka International Airport. You will be greeted here by our local guide and transported to Zomba; the former capital of British Central Africa and Nyasaland. The town has a distinctive atmosphere with leafy avenues and fading colonial buildings along the wooded mountain slopes.

Located atop the plateau, our first night in Malawi will be spent at the Ku Chawe Inn. The Inn offers us a chance to relax and soak in the wonders of this unique African destination. Surrounded by a gorgeous landscape and terraced gardens, your room will have panoramic views from Lake Chilwa and the Shire Highlands to Mount Mulanje and beyond. While gazing at the distant horizon from top of the plateau, Queen Elizabeth said, “It offers the best view in the whole of the British Empire.”

After settling in and enjoying lunch, you can choose to relax by the pool or venture out with the mountain guide for a 1 hour hike to nearby waterfall.

Day 2 - Community Experience and Transfer to Liwonde National Park

Soon after Breakfast, we will check out of the hotel and our driver will take us to YODEP; a community based organization. This youth-led project works towards improving the livelihood of their community by instituting various projects to deal with famine, literacy issues, climate change, women empowerment and cultural preservation. The project leaders will welcome us, brief us about what they do, give us a community tour and give us a chance to interact with the local community.

After this experience, we will head out to Liwonde National Park arriving at Mvuu Camp late afternoon. It is a scenic drive through the countryside, skirting mountains, towns, and villages.

After checking in and getting settled, you can take a dip in the swimming pool, rest up on the front porch of your canvas cottage, or relax in the riverside lounge while being serenaded by hippos and songbird. In the early evening, we will enjoy our first game drive stopping on the riverbank for sundowners. After experiencing the breathtaking African sunset over the Shire River, we will go into the night safari to look for some nocturnal wildlife.

Regular sightings at Mvuu include black rhino, sable, cheetah, buffalo and lion as well as impala, kudu, waterbuck and elephants.

Day 3 - Liwonde National Park

We will wake up to the beautiful sounds of birds chirping and go on an early morning walking safari in the park. After 2 hours, we will return to the camp for breakfast.

After breakfast, we will get take a boat safari, enjoying one of the best ways to view wildlife on the Shire River. We will return to the camp after 2 hours and enjoy free time before dinner under the night sky. Optional activities include:

– Lounging by the swimming pool

– Non-stop birding

– Trip to Njobvu Cultural Village Lodge and Nanthomba School

Day 4 - Transfer to Lake Malawi

After our morning activity and hearty breakfast at Mvuu Camp, we will travel by road to Cape Maclear where we will spend the next two nights. The journey will take us through scenic landscapes and local villages, offering glimpses into the authentic Malawian way of life.

Arriving at Cape Maclear, we will be welcomed at Fat Monkeys Lodge, a charming beachfront retreat where Lake Malawi unfolds before our eyes. With its crystal-clear waters and golden sandy beaches, Lake Malawi is a true paradise for relaxation and water-based activities. Take the opportunity to swim, snorkel, or simply bask in the sun on the shores of this freshwater jewel.

In the evening, there is an option to go on a sunset cruise. Watching the sunset over the vast expanse of Lake Malawi from the catamaran is an experience you will not soon forget!

Day 5 - Second day in Cape Maclear

Wake up to another morning along the picturesque shores of Lake Malawi. After breakfast, we will meet with our community guide for a village tour. This is a half day tour that includes:

– Fishing Village

– Tea Rooms and Local Shops

– Community Projects

– Schools (if open)

After lunch and the village tour, a guide will help us explore the Cape Maclear Mountains. The peak offers some of the most incredible views on this tour. We will see the bay and its three islands from the top.

Total Hiking time: 3.5 hours.

Day 6 - Transfer to Lilongwe

After breakfast, we will be transported to Lilongwe in preparation for our trip to South Luangwa the next day.

To break up the drive, we will stop at a Central Malawian Gem, Mua Mission. Mua Mission is famous for its cultural museum and the quality woodcarvings produced and sold there. This will be a great place for you to purchase authentic Malawian souvenirs. The Chamare Museum reveals the cultures of three tribal groups; Chewa, Ngoni, and Yao.

In Lilongwe, we will stay in a 650-hectare forest reserve and dairy farm. The lodge has a garden with outdoor pool. Fine cuisine in the onsite restaurant, including homegrown vegetables and dairy products, will be available. Drinks can be enjoyed at the well-stocked bar. Activities in the surroundings include bird watching, forest walks, visits to the Kumbali Cultural Village and the Permaculture Center at the Kusamala Institute of Agriculture and Ecology.

Day 7 - Travel to Zambia

Soon after breakfast, we will head to South Luangwa National Park in Zambia and spend the night at Thornicroft Lodge.

Situated on the banks of the Luangwa River in the wildlife rich Mfuwe sector, this lodge is the perfect place to experience the Valley of the Leopards! The rooms all look out onto the river providing excellent hippo and croc viewing throughout the day and offer the chance to see the elephants cross in and out of the park at sunrise and sunset!

This world-renowned Safari destination is home to over 60 species of mammals and over 400 species of birds. Thornicroft lodge offers it’s guests professional safari experience & educational tours by their expert guides.

Day 8 - Full day in South Luangwa National Park

Wake up and enjoy your breakfast while watching animals graze and drink water. After breakfast, we will enjoy a full day of safaris hoping to see Big Cats, Puku, Thornicraft’s Giraffe, Crewshay’s Zebra and Coke’s Hartebeest. After dinner we will enjoy a Sundowner overlooking the Luangwa or its plains. Into the evening we hope to spot some night life, including the elusive Leopard.

Day 9 - Travel to Victoria Falls

Today we get on a plane to venture to Livingstone. We will spend the evening on the northern banks of the Zambezi River, just 6 miles from Victoria Falls. You will have free time to participate in numerous optional activities including:

– Pool lounging

– Indulging in Spa Services

– Fishing

– Canoeing and various Water Sports

– Horseback riding

Day 10 - Victoria Falls

After breakfast, we will visit one of the most famous and iconic destinations in Africa, Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls, affectionately known as Mosi-oa Tunya by locals, meaning “the smoke that thunders.” It is the world’s LARGEST waterfall and is now one of the seven natural wonders of the world. We will watch the Zambezi River thundering over the drop – 500-million liters of water per minute – crashing into a deep gorge, throwing a cloud of mist and rainbow-lit spray high into the air.

We will enjoy dinner and the sunset while cruising down the Zambezi River.

Optional Add- On activities for the day: Ziplining from the Victoria Falls Bridge, visit to Livingstone Island, Historical Bridge Tour, and Full Moon Tour

Day 11 – Free day to explore Livingstone

Another beautiful day to explore Livingstone. There is a range of activities that we will be able to choose from including visiting Mukuni Park Curio Market, horseback riding through Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, Whitewater Rafting through the Batoka Gorge, or taking a steam train ride over the Victoria Falls Bridge.

If you want to cross another country off your list instead of staying in Livingstone, you can take a day tip to Chobe National Park in Botswana.

Day 12 – Our Epic Adventure Ends Here

We will wake up and enjoy one last breakfast together before flying to Lusaka where you will connect to your flights home.

Payment Plan Price: $4900 (The payment plan requires a non-refundable deposit of $500. At that time a payment plan will be discussed and put in place. Payments can be made monthly or bi-monthly, with the last payment being due on February 15th.

Once we have received your request for information from our CONTACT/BOOK page, we will forward you the details and travel contract. Once we receive the signed travel contract, we send you the link for payment. There you will be able to choose between a down payment for the payment plan option or the pay in full option. The payment plan option is $4900. This option allows you to pay a non-refundable $500 deposit. We will explore a payment plan option that works for you to be able to pay off the remaining balance by February 15th. The pay in full option is $4700 and is only available until 11/30/24. Yes, absolutely! The more the merrier. If you have a travel partner that would like to experience Malawi with us, send an email to info@justgowithace.com and provide the names and emails of both parties. You both will be sent a “bring a friend” discount code to use at booking.

Trip price is based on double occupancy rooms. Roommates will be assigned closer to the trip date. You will have a chance to “virtually” meet the other travelers on our Malawi/Zambia Facebook group page and through a meet and greet zoom call before the trip. If you prefer to upgrade to a private room, you will need to make this request as soon as possible. Private rooms are subject to additional cost of $655 and are on a first come first served basis.

You will need to fly into Blantyre Airport (BLZ- also known as Chileka International) by 3pm on 3/29/25. Departure flight details will leave out of Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) on 4/9/25.

U.S. Passport holders do not require a visa to visit Zambia or Malawi.

You will need to check with your local health department and/or the CDC website to determine what is needed for you. Some vaccines depend on where you are traveling from.

The basic requirement is that you are a woman 21 years old or older. There is not a max age, but travelers need to be able to be physically active and able to ride in the car for a few hours at a time. There will be a couple of days that we have long drives, as we are trying to see as much of two countries as we can on this trip. You will also be in a vehicle during the game drives and a boat on the sunset cruise and the boat safari. Some of the more physical activities will include hiking, walking, and swimming.
