Day 1 - Arrive in Blantyre
Everyone will arrive at Chileka International Airport (BLZ) where the group will be welcomed by our private driver and guide. Once everyone arrives, we will make our way into Malawi’s oldest city, Blantyre. We will learn about the history of the commercial capital of Malawi during our drive and can stop in the city market if travelers need local SIM cards or currency exchanged.
Our home for the first three nights is a beautiful lodge located on a 500-acre Game Park just outside of Blantyre. The park is a part of the Shire Highlands and is one of the last remaining indigenous forests in Malawi. An array of wildlife means we will be able to see antelopes, giraffe, and zebra within hours of landing in Malawi. Some of Malawi’s most popular birds also call this area home, so bring your binoculars and cameras as we kick off our days of amazing sightseeing.
After settling in and taking our first drive to see the wildlife, we will enjoy a welcome dinner while getting to know one another and discussing our plans for upcoming workshops.
Meals Included: Dinner
Day 2 - Women’s Skill Sharing Workshops
After an early breakfast at Game Haven, we will drive into Blantyre to kick off our two days of learning, shared knowledge, and empowerment. We will meet some incredibly resilient Malawian entrepreneurs who are passionate about business and determined to learn new skills. We will facilitate workshops based on our group’s business and life skills. We will learn about each of the women entrepreneurs, their goals, their dreams, and their skill-sets.
After introduction activities and two workshops, we will all enjoy a buffet style lunch together. Workshops and fellowship will continue after lunch. Everyone in attendance will leave the day feeling inspired.
In the late afternoon, our group will return to the lodge to enjoy some relaxation by the pool, more wildlife viewing, and/or drinks. Dinner will be enjoyed together in the dining hall before everyone calls it a night.
Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 3 - Women’s Skill Sharing Workshops
After another early breakfast, we will return to Blantyre to spend half a day with the women in business. We will enjoy more time together for fellowship, workshops, planned activities, and lunch.
We will say goodbye to these inspiring business women and make our way to Satemwa Tea Estate, a 3rd generation family owned Tea and Coffee Estate established in 1923. Here we will learn the rich history of how Malawi became the first country in Africa to plant and sell tea commercially. We will take a guided tour through the tea and coffee fields and meet some of the people working on the estate. We will have the opportunity to taste a wide range of teas that the tea estate has to offer.
We will make our way back to our lodge to enjoy dinner. Hopefully we will see some zebra as we eat! Before going to bed, we will discuss our hike to Mount Mulanje and the group will be instructed on how to repack our bags to accommodate our trek up the mountain.
*To note, all travelers should come with a backpack/daypack for the hike in Mulanje. We will have porters to carry the bulk of our things, but you will want a bag to hold water, snacks, your phone, and a rain jacket as we hike.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 4 - Hike Mount Mulanje
We will have our final breakfast at the lodge and grab a packed lunch on our way out. We will travel by road to the foothills of Mulanje Mountain, where we will be greeted by our mountain guides and porters. They will get us ready for our journey to Chambe Hut, guide us throughout our hike (3-4 hours), and have dinner prepared for us in the evening.
Once at the Hut, we can find a nearby swimming hole to cool off in, tell stories around the campfire, enjoy dinner, and gaze at a sky full of stars before going to bed.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 5 - Transfer to Liwonde National Park
After breakfast, we will descend Mount Mulanje stopping by the the famous Dziwe La Nkhalamba pools. Here we can enjoy the waterfall and have a quick swim to cool off before proceeding to the base camp. Once at the base camp, our driver will pick us up and provide us with packed lunches to enjoy while we travel to Liwonde National Park. The beginning part of our trip will be by road, but then we will transfer to a boat to enjoy the rest of the journey…hopefully seeing elephant, hippos, and birds along the way!
Liwonde lies at the southern end of Lake Malawi along the Upper Shire River (pronounced She-re), and borders Lake Malombe. The flora is dominated by mopane woodland. ‘Mopane’ refers to the butterfly shape of the leaves. Other species includes the spectacular baobab trees and the poetic fever trees. Wildlife in the park includes elephant, hippo, lions, leopards, wild dogs, zebra, warthog, greater kudu, vervet monkey, baboon, impala, water buck, bush buck, mongoose, crocodile and monitor lizard. Bird life is exceptionally varied and the river attracts fish eagles and weaver birds which build their nests in the thin woodland. Pel’s fishing owl is often seen at dusk along the river’s edge and a sighting of this rare bird is truly memorable.
We will arrive in the late afternoon and have an evening wildlife safari, a chance to see some of the park’s nocturnal animals. We will enjoy sun-downers and snacks as we watch the sunset over the Shire River. Dinner will be served once we return to the lodge.
Travel Time: 4 hrs
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 6 - Safari Day
Rise early to enjoy the fresh air and bird sounds in the area as you treat yourself to a morning cup of tea/coffee. After breakfast, head out onto the river for a morning boat safari, which is the best way to see Liwonde National Park. The heat of the day brings wildlife down to the water’s edge, where we are likely to spot elephants drinking on the river banks, large pods of hippos in the shallows, crocodile, buffalo, and a huge number of indigenous bird species.
We will return to camp for lunch and some free time. During this time you can enjoy the swimming pool, rest, or watch the wildlife from your porch.
We will go back in the wild for an evening game drive. We will enjoy sun-downers along the river and hope for our chance to observe more nocturnal animals. Dinner will be served when we return to the lodge.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 7 - Transfer to Makokola Retreat
Enjoy breakfast on the terrace followed by a riverboat safari for another chance to see elephants and crocodiles basking on the banks of the Shire River.
Return to the lodge for brunch/or packed lunch before we head for the shores of Lake Malawi. Here we will have a retreat experience like no other. We will check in to see a brilliant green garden that leads to spacious beach villas and rooms perched along the shores of Southern Lake Malawi. This showpiece property captures the essence of African design, culture and tradition.
We will have time to relax in our rooms, sip coffee at the coffee lounge, enjoy drinks by the pool, or explore Lake Malawi by kayak. Sometime before dinner we will meet with Joseph, the coordinator for Rainbow Hope School, to learn about the school and discuss our next day plans.
Travel Time: 4 hrs
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 8 - Volunteer at Rainbow Hope School
After breakfast by the beach, you will walk (20 mins) or ride a local bike taxi (5 mins) to Rainbow Hope Secondary School. We will spend the morning learning about the school, meeting the students and teachers, and leading our planned activities. Here we can focus our activities on sharing core skills of business, exploring idea development, teaching about marketing and public speaking, encouraging creativity and practicing teamwork.
We will return to the lodge for lunch and a short break. The afternoon promises to be one of heartfelt fun and laughter as the students will take their turn at hosting activities for us. These activities may include a theater performance, cultural dances, music, and perhaps a game of netball!
Our day will end with free time at the lodge to enjoy swimming in the pool or lake or participating in some fun water activities. We will enjoy sun-downers and dinner on the beach.
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 9 - Transfer To Nankoma Island
After enjoying one last beach side breakfast, we will travel to our last destination in Malawi, which may just be your favorite! We will travel by road to Salima and then hop on a speedboat to transfer us to Nankoma Island (20 mins boat transfer).
We will arrive on time for lunch and an afternoon filled with nature, fun, and relaxation. In your free time, you can schedule a massage, layout by the infinity pool, take a hike around the island, hang out by the bar, play volleyball, kayak, or snorkel.
Travel Time: 5 hours
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 10 - Day of Rest and Relaxation
Our last full day in Malawi, is a free day so that you can make it as action packed or relaxed as you want. You can choose to have an early morning wake up call to enjoy a sunrise hike or you can sleep in. You can take a kayak out, go snorkeling or simply find a hammock to relax in and read your book.
